With a Friend Like Harry

Although it closely resembles recent Euro-thriller imports like The Vanishing, Nightwatch and Insomnia, this slow-burning French thriller owes its biggest debt to the master of cinematic chillers, Alfred Hitchcock. When Michel, a harried French hubby, goes on vacation with his unhappy wife and three screaming children, he bumps into an old high school classmate named Harry at a roadside rest area. Soon the innocuous fellow has managed to insinuate himself on Michel's mundane family vacation. Friendly, cheerful and generous to a fault, Harry is soon buying the family a new car, babysitting the children and convincing Michel to take up his long-abandoned career in writing. Unfortunately, Harry is also a bit bonkers, and the closer he gets to Michel, the more the bodies start piling up. What makes this domestic thriller so interesting is not the usual knife-wielding histrionics, but the creepy fact that Harry might actually be on the right track. Fine acting, an intelligent script and a finely controlled atmosphere of menace raise this one above the standard competition. In French with English subtitles. 117 minutes
