The Claim

In the California wilderness of the late 1800s, aging mayor Daniel Dillon (Peter Mullan) rules the dead-end mining town of Kingdom Come like a benevolent dictator. All seems perfect in this harsh little Eden until two momentous events converge. First, a team of railroad surveyors (led by Wes Bentley) tromp through town deciding whether or not a "make or break" railroad station will be built there. Second, a pair of ghosts emerges from Mayor Dillon's past. Seems that, 20 years ago, Dillon traded his young wife and newborn baby to a prospector for the mine that eventually grew into the town of Kingdom Come. As his town teeters on the knife-edge of fame or collapse, can Dillon come to terms with the monumental sins of his past? Though it borrows its gritty, wintry setting from Robert Altman's McCabe and Mrs. Miller and its plot from Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge, this sparse western stakes out its own haunting, operatic territory. The cast (including Milla Jovovich, Nastassja Kinski and Sarah Polley) is intriguing, the emotions epic and the cinematography beyond exquisite. One of the best fims of the year. 120 minutes
