The Anniversary Party

Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cummings wrote, produced, directed and star in this mixture of indie chutzpah and acting school exercise. Gathering together as many of their friends as possible (Parker Posey, John C. Reilly, Kevin Kline, Phoebe Cates, Jennifer Beals) and shooting on digital video over the course of two short weeks, the duo has crafted an intimate fly-on-the-wall look at marriage, friendship and casual acquaintances in all their myriad forms. Joe (Cumming) is a famous writer-turned-director. Sally (Leigh) is a respected actress. Together, they are celebrating their sixth wedding anniversary with a host of friends. Over the course of one evening, everyone drinks, talks, takes drugs, plays charades and confesses assorted personal inadequacies. The acting is top notch (doesn't hurt that most folks are basically playing themselves) and the writing intimate. Occasionally, the emoting gets a little self-indulgent, and the story is frustratingly finite, but fans of small, well-crafted film will find much to indulge in here. 115 minutes
