Under the Sand

At 55, actress Charlotte Rampling still commands the screen as a woman whose husband of 25 years disappears mysteriously during a vacation to the beach. Has he left her? Committed suicide? Met with an accident? Director Francois Ozon's spare, yet tantilizing narrative shows us the fragility of life and the counterbalanced comforts and terrors of familiarity and change. Unable to accept or understand the loss, our heroine continues with the routines she has known for the last 25 years: talking about her husband in the present tense, buying him gifts, making him breakfast. Even as she drifts into a new life and new love, the spectre of her husband (real or imagined) still seems to hover over her. A subtle, sensitively realized look at the fragile underpinnings of European bourgeois life. 96 minutes
