Milarepa

From Bhutan comes this traditional, melodramatic retelling of the life story of the man now regarded as Tibet's greatest saint. In it, young Milarepa (Jamyang Lodro) learns black magic in order to get revenge against greedy relatives, absorbing a simple spiritual lesson about vengeance in the process. Stylistically and dramatically speaking, it's not a particularly sophisticated film. It's actually the debut work of Neten Chokling Rinpoche, a young Tibetan lama revered as the fourth incarnation of the 19th-century Buddhist meditation master Chokgyur Lingpa. He's no David Lean, but he's sincere enough that curious audiences will overlook the film's more naive elements (special effects, for example). In Tibetan with English subtitles. 90 minutes
