Curse of the Jade Scorpion

Woody Allen tries his hand at old-fashioned screwball comedy with mixed results. Allen plays a 1940s insurance investigator under pressure from his firm's contentious new "efficiency expert" (Helen Hunt) to solve a string of mysterious burglaries. In a crazy turn of events, Allen is both criminal and investigator, the result of a wily hypnotist's trick. Allen has worked himself into a groove of late, and fans will undoubtedly know what to expect from this lightweight laugher. As always, the one-liners are hilarious, but the romance is decidedly uneasy. Hunt and Charlize Theron are among the nubile young things throwing themselves at the well-seasoned actor/director. The zany premise is a good jumping-off point, but this one's a long way from Woody classics like The Purple Rose of Cairo. 103 minutes
