Crossing the Line

This mesmerizing documentary relates the story of the last American "defector" to North Korea, James Joseph Dresnok, a soldier who walked across the demilitarized zone in 1962 and never looked back. Filmmaker Daniel Gordon has been given unprecedented access to the notoriously secretive nation in the wake of his eye-opening films The Game of Their Lives and A State of Mind, and he uses it here, creating a fascinating portrait of both North Korea and its long-forgotten human propaganda tool. As in previous films, Gordon takes the neutral path, allowing the subject to speak for himself and viewers to decide how much of a tool Dresnok still remains. 94 minutes
