This Spanish import is a chilly exercise in psychological ghost stories. Comparisons to producer Guillermo del Toro's own The Devil's Backbone and to Alejandro Amenábar's The Others abound. Belén Rueda (The Sea Inside) stars as a wife and mother who returns to the abandoned orphanage where she grew up in hopes of reopening it as a boarding school for handicapped children. Her altruistic ambitions run dry, however, when her troubled son starts conversing with a cabal of invisible friends. It's intelligently written and long on spooky atmosphere, but there are plenty of "jump out of your seat" moments. In Spanish with English subtitles.100 minutes R.
