The Road Home

A young Chinese professional, Luo Yusheng, returns to the tiny rural village of his birth to deal with the funeral of his father, a much-respected teacher. For the most part, the film is one long flashback relating the story of how Yusheng's father (Zheng Hao) and mother (Zhang Ziyi, the ass-kicker with the Noxema girl face from Crouching Tiger) met and fell in love back in the 1950s. Director Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern, The Story of Qui Ju, To Live) has crafted a touching, picturesque little tale, but the rice paper-thin plot has been stretched to its limits. Even at an hour and a half, the film is studiously slow-going. In Mandarin with English subtitles. 88 minutes
