The Cats of Mirikitani

In 2001, New York filmmaker Linda Hattendorf befriended a homeless artist near her SoHo apartment. What she found in octogenarian Jimmy Tsutomu Mirikitani was a fascinating story stretching from the Japanese internment camps of the '40s though to the horror of Sept. 11. More than just a subject of cinematic study, Mirikitani became a friend to Hattendorf, and much of the story involves the filmmaker's attempts to help Mirikitani get back on his feet. A deeply moving, profoundly humanist documentary. Director Linda Hattendorf will be at the theater in person on Wednesday, Feb. 27, for the 8 p.m. show. In English and Japanese with English subtitles. 74 minutes
