Poetic filmmaker David Gordon Green (George Washington, All The Real Girls) breaks out another delicate, beautifully composed portrait of everyday life. Working off Stewart O'Nan's novel, Green introduces audiences to Glenn (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind's Sam Rockwell), a born-again Christian and recovering alcoholic trying to reconnect with his small-town family. His wife (Kate Beckinsale) wants nothing to do with him, but he works hard to get back into the good graces of his estranged daughter. There are a few other tenuously connected plot threads, not all of which come together as cohesively as Green might have hoped; but the glum mood and great cast make this fatalistic drama worthwhile. 106 minutes R.
