The Year My Parents Went on Vacation

In the summer of 1970 (when Brazil is busy going mad over the World Cup), a young boy is left with his grandfather in São Paulo while his parents go on "vacation." (Actually, they're fleeing the brutal military dictatorship as dissidents). Unfortunately, gramps has kicked the bucket mere hours before the boy's arrival, leaving the kid to fend for himself in an unfamiliar Orthodox Jewish neighborhood. It's a typical coming-of-age tale in some ways, but it's laced with enough humor to make it an enjoyable journey. In Portuguese, Yiddish and German with English subtitles. 104 minutes PG.
