Beaufort

A group of Israeli soldiers are stationed at a historic 12 th century Lebanese outpost shortly before Israel pulled out of the country in 2000. Less of a war film and more of a look at the day-to-day mixture of tedium and tension facing soldiers, Beaufort is an unusually apolitical film. You could view the film's steady-handed examination of an occupying army standing down (quitting, withdrawing, whatever) from a conflict as a parable for today's Middle East. Or you could simply look at it as a methodical sketch of life and death in uniform. Part of the 2008 Israeli Film Festival. In Hebrew with English subtitles. 125 minutes
