The Exiles

This long-lost, virtually unknown 1961 film has been newly restored with help from Charles Burnett (Killer of Sheep) and Chris Eyre (Smoke Signals). Its documentary-style storyline spends a day in the life of a group of twentysomething Native Americans who left reservation life in the '50s and took up residence in Los Angeles' Bunker Hill neighborhood. The script was pieced together over several years of interviews with the subjects of the film. Director Kent MacKenzie's gritty, no-frills style makes this one of the most honest portraits of marginalized American populations ever shot. 72 minutes
