The Duplass brothers (makers of the 2005 SXSW Film Fest hit The Puffy Chair) offer up another lo-fi digital filmmaking exercise—this one a rumination on lo-fi digital filmmaking exercises. A bunch of creatively bankrupt friends ends up at an isolated cabin in the woods in hopes of coming up with a brilliant screenplay for a DIY movie. One of them eventually dreams up a stupid idea about a serial killer with a paper bag over his head, which leads to an actual serial killer with a bag over his head showing up and offing the would-be filmmakers. This one's an odd mix of mumblecore-style relationship comedy and occasionally quite effective no-budget horror. In a year or so, the whole world is going to be sick of the word "mumblecore," but for the moment, it's a fresh new direction to explore.82 minutes R.
