Towelhead

Alan Ball (writer of American Beauty and "Six Feet Under") continues to excoriate suburbia--this time with the added element of racism. Newbie Summer Bishil stars as a 13-year-old mixed-race Arab-American girl who moves to a Houston neighborhood, experiences contempt from her classmates and goes through a rude sexual awakening. As in American Beauty, she tries to sleep with an adult neighbor, this one a married Army reservist played by Aaron Eckhart. Bishil is great, capturing her character's rocky coming-of-age, but Ball can't resist heaping too many issues and themes on the fire.
