Liam

Following the big ticket success of his Hollywood films (High Fidelity, Hero, The Grifters, Dangerous Liaisons), Brit director Stephen Frears retreats to the humble English drama that made him famous (My Beautiful Landrette, Sammy and Rosie Get Laid, Prick Up Your Ears). Set in Liverpool during the Depression-racked 1930s, Frears' newest film follows one impoverished Irish Catholic family dealing with both internal and external strife. Little Liam (newcomer Anthony Burrows) is about to have his first church communion, but his poor father can't afford to buy clothes from the local Jewish tailor. Soon, Dad succumbs to the lure of anti-Semitism and joins a group of right-wing thugs. Although this is a dark, downbeat tale, seeing it all through the eyes of young Liam gives the whole thing a beautiful poignancy. 90 minutes
