Mother (1926)

Russian director Vsevolod Pudovkin created this, his first masterpiece in 1926. Based on the novel by Maxim Gorky, the story tells of a mother whose son leads an illegal labor strike during the 1905 uprising. In an attempt to save her son's life, the mother gives him away to the police. In the wake of her son's suffering and injustice, however, the mother gradually turns to the cause of Communism.
