Va Savoir

Although not particularly well-known here in America, French filmmaker Jacques Rivette was the first of the critics for Cahiers du Cinéma (a very influential film mag) to become a feature film director. Va Savoir is Rivette's 29th film to date. This wry spoof of fools in love follows three men and three women as they become entangled in each other's lives during the brief run of a play in Paris. Audrey Hepburnish Jeanne Balibar is our central figure, an actress who radiates strength and confidence on stage, but becomes a neurotic mess off stage. The narrative doesn't build to much of consequence, but the ever-increasing series of interlocking love triangles makes for delicious cinema. In French with English subtitles. 148 minutes
