Public Enemies

Director Michel Mann ("Miami Vice," Heat, Collateral) like to put guys in suits, and Johnny Depp is at his best playing dress-up, so there's reason to be excited by this fact-based historical crime flick about the war between '30s gangster John Dillinger (Depp) and stalwart government agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale). The film loses focus over the course of 140 minutes, working with too many characters and not enough basic storytelling, but Depp looks like he's having fun in all those sweet hats and slick ties. 140 minutes R.
