Whatever Works

Larry David is the latest and about the least appealing substitute for Woody Allen in a Woody Allen film. (Worse than Kenneth Branagh in Celebrity? OK, maybe not.) David is a grumpy, misanthropic old Jew (so, basically the same as he is on "Curb Your Enthusiasm") who kvetches at the camera just like Allen did in Annie Hall and falls in love with some jailbait (Evan Rachel Wood). In returning to New York after a (mostly) fruitful sojourn in Europe, Allen is up to some tired old tricks. The screenplay allegedly dates back to 1977, and it shows. 92 minutes PG-13.
