The details are sumptuous but the overall shape is lacking in the period biopic about innovative fashion maven Coco Chanel. The film takes place in turn-of-the-20th-century France, where ambitious, young, pre-fame Coco (the always-charming Audrey Tautou) goes through a collection of wealthy suitors. Oddly, the film spends far more time establishing what formed the designer's notions of love and marriage than her notions of tailleur and accoutrement. It's pretty and well-acted but misses the boat. Or to be more precise, shows up well before the boat sails. 105 minutes PG-13.
