Red Cliff

After a decade or so abroad, Hong Kong action king John Woo (The Killer, Hard-Boiled, Face/Off) returns to China for this epic (and I mean epic) take on the classic historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It's not easy keeping all the scrap-happy 14th century scholars, generals, warlords, chancellors and courtesans separated in your head, but the film's massive, gorgeously shot battle scenes are among the best you'll ever see on the big screen. This truncated version of Woo's original two-part film distills the art of war down to its soul-stirring, blood-pumping best. 148 minutes (Opens Thursday 12/17)
