House (Hausu)

Over the years, Nobuhiko Obayashi's 1977's ghost story has become something of a legend. Thanks to its primitive special effects, surreal setting and anything-goes attitude, House has been tagged a cult classic. Few people have actually seen the film, however. Until now. Young high school girl Oshare (Kimiko Ikegami) decides to spend summer vacation at her aunt's house with a bunch of school chums. Unfortunately, her aunt is dead and the house is haunted by the specter of a demonic cat. Words simply can't do justice to this bat-shit insane horror flick, which looks like somebody on heavy psychotropic drugs tried to combine Evil Dead with The Breakfast Club. In Japanese with English subtitles. 87 minutes
