Police, Adjective

This award-winning Romanian film is a canny, blackly comic take on '70s-style police procedurals. The story surrounds a conflicted cop, who's been tasked with busting a high school kid dealing marijuana to his teenage pals. Over time, we realize that our policeman is a good guy trying to do his job amid an uncaring bureaucracy that's more interested in results than "justice." The film is a methodical (and paradoxically quite silent) study of language, conversation, words and meanings, but it rewards patience with clever, bone-dry humor and a thoughtful examination of the authoritarian enforcement of rules. In Romanian with English subtitles. 113 minutes
