If ever there was as story begging for the Tim Burton treatment, it's Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Aussie Mia Wasikowska (Amelia) stars as a 19-year-old Alice returning to the land of her childhood adventures to end the Red Queen's reign of terror. But it's Johnny Depp who's getting the most press as the wacked-out Mad Hatter. Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Alan Rickman are among the actors giving body (or at least voice) to the CGI-heavy character list. Like most adaptations, this one doesn't really seem to understand the original books, exploiting them for little more than psychedelic backdrops. But the characters feel right and the cast is clearly having fun.108 minutes PG.
