Noah Baumbach has directed one pitch-perfect indie film (The Squid and the Whale) as well as one overly shrill flick (Margot at the Wedding). He also wrote Wes Anderson's last two films (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Fantastic Mr. Fox). Here, he offers another microcosmic study in family dynamics. Ben Stiller plays against type as a neurotic New Yorker who moves to Los Angeles in order to house-sit for his brother (and maybe get his life in order). A mopey misanthrope, he nonetheless strikes up a tentative relationship with his brother's assistant (Greta Gerwig). There's humor here, but it's largely filtered through Stiller's angry, narcissistic character.107 minutes R.
