Double Take

Conspiracy-loving media artist Johan Grimonprez (Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y) directs this brainbending mashup of documentary and fiction. By examining British filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock's work in the context of the late-'50s, early-'60s Cold War, Grimonprez traces the global rise of fear as a commodity. Using old clips of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and stitching them to archival images of Khruschev, Kennedy and Nixon (then adding in modern "recreations" with a Hitchcock impersonator), Grimonprez concocts a fake narrative about the director meeting his own doppelgänger on a film set. It's an odd amalgam, but if you dig the found footage work of guys like Craig Baldwin (Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America), you might appreciate the serious-minded joke. 80 minutes
