Australian Bruce Beresford (Breaker Morant, Tender Mercies, Driving Miss Daisy) directs this elegant melodrama based on the autobiography of Li Cunxin. At age 11, Li was taken from his rural Chinese village to study ballet in Beijing. In 1979, while on a cultural exchange to Texas, he fell in love with an American dancer. Defection soon followed. The tale is simple and rather conventionally told, but some fine cinematography and a convincingly athletic central lead (trained dancer Chi Cao) smooth over some of the film's more clichéd dramatics.117 minutes PG.
