Filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost document the growing online friendship between Schulman's brother Nev, a 24-year-old New York-based photographer, and Abby, an 8-year-old girl from rural Michigan who wants to make a painting from one of his photographs. Billing itself as a "reality thriller" only makes us question the filmmakers' intentions. Yes, there is a "twist" in this technologically obsessed tale—though not a particularly shocking one. Even if the film is genuine, it is highly contrived and features some serious dramatic manipulation on the part of the "documentarians." Ultimately, though, it does offer up some interesting ruminations on reality, identity and communication in today's internet-only world. It also inspired the MTV series of the same name.86 minutes PG-13.
