We Were Soldiers

Now that our country is at war with the vague, nebulous specter known as terrorism, Hollywood figures we're all desperate to check out historical war movies in which America battled clear-cut enemies and easily defined nations. Randall Wallace (who roused the troops as screenwriter of Braveheart) writes and directs this Vietnam-set war story about a little-known battle between 400 American soldiers and roughly 2,000 North Vietnamese troops. Like Black Hawk Down before it, this heroic war story is basically one long parade of young Americans being shot in the head and/or neck. The result is both upsetting and tedious. Mel Gibson, Greg Kinnear and Chris Klein star. 140 minutes
