Yup, it's the inspiring true story of that hiker dude who cut his own arm off with a pocket knife. While that doesn't sound like the most fertile basis for a feature, writer-director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later, Trainspotting) and actor James Franco have put their all into it. The resulting film is dramatic, tense, surprisingly funny and incredibly inventive for a tale whose principal cast consists of a guy, a rock and a knife. Still, it's hard to get around the fact that it's about a dude severing his own arm. The climactic amputation is so believably shot that it's basically unwatchable. In the end, you might not be sure if you're inspired or just grateful the whole grueling thing is over with.94 minutes R.
