Made in Dagenham

The Brits just love these working-class dramedies (see also: Billy Elliot, The Full Monty, Brassed Off, Kinky Boots). This one's a dramatization of the (very real) 1968 workers' strike at the British Ford plant in Dagenham where female workers walked out in protest against sexual discrimination. Director Nigel Cole (Calendar Girls, Saving Grace) along with stars Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky), Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day) and Bob Hoskins (Mona Lisa) treat the material as a crowd-pleasing "you go girl" pep talk. The story may be a predictable David-and-Goliath affair, but the cast is charming and the story is a warm one. 113 minutes R.
