Javier Bardem got an Oscar nomination (and deservedly so) for his acting in this glum drama from director Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel). Bardem is a single father struggling to raise two kids in inner-city Barcelona. He's working as a low-rent criminal. And he's dying of prostate cancer. And he's a psychic who talks to dead people. Honestly, the mix is a little weird here. Those who appreciate a good wallow in other people's misery will heap praise on this darkly beautiful melodrama. It's a powerful work of art. But fun, it ain't.147 minutes R.
