Paul Giamatti does fine leading man work in this adaptation of Mordecai (The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz) Richler's "life of a mensch" saga. Giamatti is the titular fellow, a post-middle-aged schlub who has managed to marry three hot babes (Rachelle Lefevre, Minnie Driver and Rosamund Pike) and get rich off producing a crummy Canadian soap opera. Jumping back and forth in time, we see Barney's life from the early-’70s onward. The film covers a wide, seemingly unfocussed swath of time and space. But the character work by Giamatti and others (Dustin Hoffman!) is impeccable.FULL REVIEW:Paul Giamatti impresses in story of a Jewish TV producer who tries to get life right by Devin D.
