We Are What We Are

Layered with intense drama and sly black humor, this Mexican import wonders what would happen if the patriarch of a modern-day cannibal family were to kick the bucket. With the family's main blood-winner out of the picture, the family's teenage kids must step up and find a way of procuring sustenance in the poverty-stricken heart of Mexico City. The look is raw and the violence is bloody, but first-time filmmaker Jorge Michel Grau manages to weave a lot of social commentary about today's dog-eat-dog world into the nastiness. 90 minutes R.
