No Man's Land

This year's Oscar winner for "Best Foreign Film" was this unlikely Bosnian effort. Set during the height of the early '90s conflict in the Balkans, the film follows two contentious soldiers from opposite camps who find themselves trapped in the title location. What ensues is a tragic farce of military stupidity and ethnic tribalism. Instead of bonding, our two protagonists look for new and different ways to kill each other--even as the world around them tries to off the duo with its own indifference. Think Catch 22, with an even blacker sense of humor. In Bosnian, Croatian, French, English and a couple other tongues with English subtitles. 98 minutes
