Big Trouble

Columnist Dave Barry's first stab at a comic crime novel borrowed heavily from fellow Floridians Elmore Leonard (Get Shorty) and Carl Hiaasen (Striptease). The fact that Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed the film translation of Get Shorty, also directs the big-screen version of Barry's novel only highlights the similarities. Tim Allen stars as a reporter-turned-adman who gets mixed up in a crazy quilt of gun-runners, street thugs, cops, hitmen, FBI agents, two lovestruck teens, a homeless hippie, a Cuban maid and a psychedelic toad—all of whom (well, excepting the toad) are after a mysterious suitcase. The plot is one long string of wacky coincidence, but the ensemble cast is laced with ringers (Dennis Farina, Janeane Garofalo, Johnny Knoxville, Jason Lee, Tom Sizemore, Stanley Tucci, Andy Richter and Patrick Warburton among them). Stupidly, this film was yanked from release in the wake of Sept. 11 and is just now making its way to theaters. The ridiculous romp has a few hilarious highlights but is way to inconsequential to offend even the most sensitive of viewers. 85 minutes
