Wondering why times are missing?

Festival in Cannes

Writer/director Henry Jaglom has happily toiled on the borders of the indie film industry for decades. His deeply personal, largely improvisational films are a matter of taste, but he has created a memorable résumé. (A Safe Place, Tracks, Eating, Venice/Venice, Babyfever, Last Summer in the Hamptons are just a few of the highlights.) His latest is a funny, insightful glimpse at the wheeling and dealing that fuels the infamous Cannes Film Festival. The ensemble cast is packed with old and new faces, all working their magic. Greta Scacchi, Ron Silver, Anouk Aimée, Maximillian Schell and Peter Bogdonovich are among the well-knowns. The loose (and very leisurely paced) story concerns an aging actress attempting to convince a faded European superstar to appear in her writing/directing debut. A sleazy, would-be producer, an up-and-coming starlet, a womanizing German director and a desperate Hollywood bigwig all figure into the film's frothy mix of backstabbing, romance and artistic endeavor. 99 minutes
