Maniac (1980)

William Lustig (Maniac Cop) directed this controversial, blood-soaked 1980 slasher flick. But it's actor/screenwriter Joe Spinell's show all the way. Spinell (Rocky, Taxi Driver) is our protagonist (?), a schizophrenic serial killer who stalks the sleazy streets of New York City looking for nubile young victims. But when he befriends an attractive photographer (Caroline Munro from The Spy Who Loved Me, Starcrash and The Golden Voyage of Sinbad), can he mend his stabby ways? Latex-slinging legends Rob Bottin and Tom Savini contributed the justifiably famous gore effects. 87 minutes R.
