Austrian agent provocateur Michael Haneke's latest may not be as controversial as his other films (Funny Games, The Piano Teacher), but it is an intriguing look at modern European life. The episodic story concentrates on a farm lad who runs away from home to join his brother in big city Paris. Unfortunately, his bro, a photojournalist, is off covering the war in Kosovo. Angered, our protagonist tosses an empty bag in a beggar's lap. Thanks to this simple, seemingly inconsequential act, a half-dozen characters (an actor, a taxi driver, a music teacher at a school for deaf mute children and more) become locked in a collison course. Juliete Binoche headlines the multi-national cast. In French, Malinka, Romanian, German, Arabic and American Sign Language with English subtitles (honest!). 118 minutes
