This mesmerizing Middle Eastern drama starts with the reading of a will. Two modern Canadians are tasked by their deceased mother with hunting down and finding a father and brother they never knew. With virtually no ties to their ethnic and religious heritage, the two traverse an unnamed Islamic land (based heavily on Lebanon) in search of some long-buried family secrets. Much of the film is told in flashback, relating the remarkable, tragic life of the mother (Lubna Azabal in a devastating, decades-spanning role). Along the way, writer-director Denis Villeneuve composes a story that feels both contemporary and mythic, gut-wrenching and thought-provoking. In English, French and Arabic with English subtitles. 130 minutes R.
