Nostalgia for the Light

In Chile's Atacama Desert, astronomers peer into the cosmos searching for the origins of the universe. Oddly enough, documentarian Patricio Guzmán (Salvador Allende, The Battle of Chile) contrasts this with the lives of nearby villagers who sift through the desert's remote sands. They're searching for body parts of loved ones unceremoniously dumped by Augusto Pinochet's bloody regime. It's a jarring juxtaposition, but Guzmán beautifully contrasts meditative shots of the night sky with contemplative interviews to create a carefully crafted rumination on time, distance, life and loss, and the unending search for truth. In Spanish with English subtitles. 90 minutes
