The Trip

Director Michael Winterbottom (Wonderland, The Claim, A Mighty Heart, The Killer Inside Me) teams with comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon (who worked with Winterbottom on 24 Hour Party People and Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story) for this shambolically funny meta-documentary. Coogan is asked by London newspaper The Observer to embark on a foodie tour of England's finest restaurants. He views this as the perfect romantic getaway with his beautiful girlfriend--until she backs out, and he's forced to make the trip with his aggravating best friend, Rob. The comic duo lets loose with the improv, playing winkingly fictionalized versions of themselves and otherwise screwing with expectations of comedy and reality (as they did in Tristram Shandy). This is actually a truncated version of a six-part U.K. TV series, but even the shaved-down version is filled with blisteringly funny/uncomfortable moments. 110 minutes
