Rather than follow-up Tim Burton's abortive 2001 remake, this surprisingly good speculative action flick imagines what could have led to the creation of the ape world seen in the popular '70s sci-fi series. Turns out it was genetic engineer James Franco experimenting with intelligence-enhancing drugs, creating an ape genius named Caesar and accidentally kicking off the simian uprising. Who knew? Kudos go to Andy Serkis (Gollum in The Lord of the Rings) for his emotive motion-capture acting. 105 minutes PG-13.
