Indie film demigod John Sayles (Sunshine State, Lone Star, The Secret of Roan Inish, Passion Fish, City of Hope, Matewan, Eight Men Out) crafts this epic, fictional account of the Philippine-American War. The story centers around Rafael (Filipino actor Joel Torre), a small-town mayor who tries to keep local calm by befriending the American occupiers (Garret Dillahunt and Chris Cooper among them). There are obvious parallels to Iraq and Afghanistan, rendering Sayles' dogmatic script about the dangers of American Imperialism openly preachy at times. But the history lesson is worth absorbing. In English, Spanish and Tagalog with English subtitles. 128 minutes R.
