Even the movie poster looks like a wan Xerox copy in this Americanized remake of Sam Peckinpah's 1971 revenge classic. James Marsden (X-Men) and Kate Bosworth (Blue Crush) are mighty slim substitutes for Dustin Hoffman and Susan George in the original. Director Rod Lurie (The Contender, The Last Castle) is no Peckinpah when it comes to morally ambiguous cinematic violence. The story—about a nice, urban couple who move to the country and must soon take up arms against an army of inbred bullies and rapists—remains the same. But the location has been moved from Cornwall, England, to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to better serve the more blatant hicksploitation angle.110 minutes R.
