Actress Vera Farmiga (The Departed, Up In The Air) turns director to adapt Carolyn S. Briggs' eye-opening memoir. Over the course of four decades, our faith-based heroine (Farmiga) grows into and slightly out of a group of long-haired, born-again Jesus lovers. It's rare to find a film that treats traditional religion with such an even hand. Rather than finding fault with fundamental Christianity, Higher Ground quietly points out that--even for the most devoted--religion is no panacea. Unfortunately, by presenting no villains and giving little editorial guidance to audiences, the film lacks a certain amount of dramatic tension, drifting from one subtle moment of self-doubt to another. 109 minutes R.
