Over the course of four decades, our faith-based heroine (Farmiga) grows into and slightly out of a group of long-haired, born-again Jesus lovers. It's rare to find a film that treats traditional religion with such an even hand. Rather than finding fault with fundamental Christianity, Higher Ground quietly points out that—even for the most devoted—religion is no panacea. Unfortunately, by presenting no villains and giving little editorial guidance to audiences, the film lacks a certain amount of dramatic tension, drifting from one subtle moment of self-doubt to another.109 minutes R.
