In this alternately gentle and hard-hitting South African drama, a resolute 12-year-old (first-timer Khomotso Manyaka) must overcome fear and prejudice after poisonous rumors force her mother to flee their dusty backwater home outside Johannesburg. The film stays mostly mum about the rumor in question (although in modern-day Africa, it's not hard to figure out what life-ruining gossip might look like). As our main character, visible in just about every scene, Manyaka carries the film on her sturdy shoulders. Thank director Oliver Schmitz (Paris, Je T'Amie) for creating strong emotions without resorting to schmaltzy manipulation. In Sotho with English subtitles. 100 minutes PG-13.
