Restless
If this were an indie dramedy shot in 1997 by some first-time director, it would be a cult hit. But since it's shot in 2011 by Gus Van Sant (
Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho, Good Will Hunting), it comes across as a hopelessly outdated slice of twee hipsterism. Mia Wasikowska (
The Kids Are All Right) plays a terminally ill (but radiantly beautiful) teenager who falls in love with a morose, death obsessed boy who hangs out at funerals (spikey-haired Dennis Hopper offspring Henry Hopper). Yeah, yeah, Gus, we all loved
Harold and Maude. It's just more teenage angst worship from Van Sant (who's been stuck in a rut delivering similarly forgettable piffle like
Gerry, Elephant, Last Days and
Paranoid Park lately).
91 minutes PG-13.
